Togo’s constitutional reform
Togo has entered a new political era with the official establishment of the Fifth Republic on May 3rd, 2025. This follows the adoption of a new Constitution that significantly reshapes the country’s institutional framework. Under this parliamentary system, the role of the President of the Republic is now largely ceremonial, while executive power is concentrated in the hands of the President of the Council of Ministers, a newly created position. Faure Gnassingbé, who served as President of the Republic for 20 years, has been appointed to this key executive role.
