With more than 99% of the votes, the Liberals have obtained 43.6% of the votes, while the Conservative Party of Pierre Poilievre has achieved 41.4%.
Meanwhile, 6.4% of the votes went to the sovereign Bloc Québécois, 6.3% to the social democrats of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and 1.2% to the Green Party.
However, Carney’s government failed to form the majority government he wanted, 172/343 of deputies had to be obtained to govern in a majority form without dependence on another smaller party.
A turn for Carney
The polls already pointed to a lead for the liberals in the final stretch of the campaign, after months showing the conservatives at the top, with up to 20 points difference.
The turning point came in the first months of 2025, when a series of events disrupted the Canadian political situation: the resignation of Justin Trudeau, the subsequent appointment of Carney as leader of the Liberals and prime minister; and Trump’s return to the White House with the resulting threats and tariffs.
With a long career in finance but novice in politics, the leader of the liberals presented himself as the best alternative to deal with the combative US president and lead the country through the economic and social problems that he was already dragging on.
Canada strong
« President Trump is trying to break us down so he can own us, but that will never happen, » he added. He added that he and the US president will discuss « the future of two sovereign and independent nations » in the coming days.
He also spoke of his intention to strengthen partnerships with other countries, including those in Europe.
« Because Canada is more than a nation: we are and always will be a federation, » he declared, and promised that his government would work « with all provinces and territories ».
