Russia-Ukraine conflict: Summary of last week

Ukraine is a buffer zone between Russia and Europe. The country is divided between a pro-Western majority in the west and pro-Russian separatists who refuse to "leave" Moscow. About 17% of the population is of Russian origin and the eastern part of the country is predominantly Russian-speaking. The election of pro-Western reformist President Viktor Yushchenko (2005-2010) marked the beginning of Kiev's rapprochement with the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance created in 1949 to counter the Soviet threat. A new proximity unthinkable and unbearable for Vladimir Putin, who fears a threat to the security of his country.

Quebec will impose an exclusive tax on unvaccinated Canadians

Quebec's prime minister recently announced that the 10% of citizens who have not received any doses of the COVID-19 vaccine so far, should not "harm" the 90% who are already vaccinated. The Canadian province will therefore charge a health tax to residents who are not vaccinated against COVID-19.
