In August 2023, a military coup in Gabon abruptly ended the decades-long rule of the Bongo family, which had governed the small West African country for over 55 years. With tensions rising over a controversial election and allegations of electoral fraud, Gabonese soldiers stepped in to seize power. Now, as the country heads into its first presidential election since the coup, the question on everyone’s mind is whether this will be a genuine transition to democracy or whether the military will retain control under the guise of electoral legitimacy.
